Andy Murray recovers from a second set blip with some superb tennis to brush aside Paul Capdeville and reach the US Open third round.The 22-year-old looked on course for a routine win when he eased through the first set but an inspired Capdeville stunned the Scot by taking the second. Murray responded with some of his best tennis, though, firing 44 winners on his way to a 6-2 3-6 6-0 6-2 victory. Next up for the second seed is American wildcard Taylor Dent. Dent, contesting his first US Open since 2005 after two back operations, came through a five-set thriller against Spain’s Ivan Navarro 6-4 5-7 6-7 7-5 7-6 (11-9). “My execution isn’t at the level that I would like to go into a match playing Andy Murray,” said the 28-year-old world number 195. “So I’m going to make up for that with just pure grit and toughness up there.” Navarro had been a shock first-round winner over 27th seed Ivo Karlovic, while 19th seed Stanislas Wawrinka, another potentially tricky opponent for Murray, was also eliminated in round one. And with the draw opening up in front of him and Murray already showing glimpses of his tremendous ability and conditioning, the Scot looks in prime form to launch an assault on the title.
“Basically, I played three good sets and one bad one,” Murray said after the match. “In the second set, I had a bit of a down, physically. I wasn’t exhausted, maybe I didn’t eat enough or I ate too soon to the match, because I felt like I was going to be sick. “Perhaps that’s the time change after playing my first round match late in the evening, but obviously I’ll address that in the next round. “After that, though, I backed off the baseline, went bigger on my first serve, and got a lot more free points. I was happy with the way I played those final two sets.” Murray used to train with 26-year-old world number 87 Capdeville at the Sanchez-Casal academy in Barcelona – and that familiarity paid dividends in a one-sided first set. An opening service game that went to deuce four times suggested a tough test for Capdeville, and so it proved as Murray put his foot on the accelerator after a comfortable couple of service games. With the Scot crawling all over the Chilean’s second serve, two brutal forehand winners helped Murray to a 5-2 lead and, after saving two break points with delicious touch volleys in game eight, the number two seed secured set one when Capdeville sent a service return long.
