Sweden’s Anna Carin Olofsson-Zidek emerged as favourite to upgrade her Olympic 7.5km sprint silver to gold in Vancouver 2010 after her second win of the season in Ruhpolding, Germany. The 36-year old, who will also defend her 12.5km mass start title in Vancouver, would have won the sprint event in Turin but one shooting error meant an extra 150m loop, causing the Swede to finish 2.4 seconds behind France’s Florence Baverel-Robert.
But there were no such errors for Olofsson-Zidek in Germany as she completed 10 perfect shots to finish in 23:49.6 minutes and take over this season’s sprint World Cup standings.
Russia’s Olga Medvedtseva was the only other person in the top 10 to complete two perfect shoots but couldn’t match Olofsson-Zidek’s speed between the range and finished 29.8 back in second.
Former overall World Cup champion Magdalena Neuner won sprint gold in Ruhpolding 12 months ago but had two settle for bronze this time round after two misses in her standing shoot meant the German finished 40.6 back.
Overall World Cup leader Helena Jonsson missed two shots in the prone position and finished 15th but maintains her lead in the standings on 476 with Olofsson-Zidek second on 412 and Russia’s Svetlana Sleptsova third on 357.
