Bill Haas joins his father Jay in winning the five-round Bob Hope Classic after clinching a one-shot victory on the final hole in California.Haas went into the final day one stroke off the lead but burst clear of a congested leaderboard with a flawless 64 to finish on 30 under par. He completed victory with a birdie four at the last after going for broke with a brave tee shot. Tim Clark, Matt Kuchar and Bubba Watson finished tied for second on 29 under. Haas, who had never previously finished higher than joint third on the PGA Tour, said he had some nervy moments during the final round of the 90-hole pro-am event. The 27-year-old had led by two strokes after an electric start but the chasing pack reduced the deficit and a birdie on 17 put him level with leaders Clark and Kuchar. Haas fired his approach at the last to within 27 feet and two putts were enough to seal a victory that emulates the win his father recorded at the same event in 1988. “This feels unbelievable,” he said. “I was so nervous coming down the stretch. I still don’t know how I hit the [approach] shot on 18 – my hands were shaking.”
