Classy Newcastle crush Cardiff

Newcastle romped past Cardiff with a crushing 5-1 victory at St James’s Park to move six points clear at the top of the Championship table.A first-half brace from Andy Carroll was followed by substitute Peter Lovenkrands’s second-half double as the Magpies cruised past Dave Jones’s side with consummate ease.
An own-goal from Gabor Gyepes saw Cardiff further capitulate, while a consolation from 19-year-old substitute Aaron Wildig reduced the deficit without masking the visitors’ dismal display.
Cardiff comprehensively outplayed in a frantic opening as Carroll grabbed his first in the third minute with a clinical finish and, after the striker hit the post three minutes later, Gyepes saw the ball richochet off his leg into an empty net.
Carroll made it three in the 15th minute courtesy of a powerful header from Danny Simpson’s pinpoint cross from the left as David Marshall was left helpless yet again.
Enter Lovenkrands on the hour mark, and the Dane took just nine minutes to open his account after latching on to the excellent Wayne Routledge’s precise delivery to fire a rasping strike past Marshall.
Eight minutes from time, and Lovenkrands had his ninth goal of the season, and Newcastle’s fifth, as the hosts continued to run riot against Jones’s beleaguered side. The winger charged at Anthony Gerrard before he cut inside and curled an exquisite finish inside the far post.
Both managers made their full allocation of changes in a fragmented second half which threatened to peter out entirely, but Wildig pounced in the 88th minute to grab his first senior goal after an incisive run and cross from Ross McCormack.
It was a chastening evening for the Bluebirds, but Newcastle showed their class to extend their lead to six points ahead of second-placed West Brom and further exert their authority in the league.
