Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has been charged with two counts of tax evasion relating to payments he received while Portsmouth boss.Redknapp, who was originally arrested in November 2007 as part of the Stevens enquiry into football corruption, was being investigated over £40,000 of unpaid tax relating to a payment alleged to have been made to a Monaco bank account by former Portsmouth owner Milan Mandaric.
The 62-year-old was informed before Christmas that charges would be brought this week, and voluntarily attended Bishopsgate police station to be charged on Thursday, according to his solicitor.
A Crown Prosecution Service statement confirmed that Redknapp “has been charged with two counts of cheating the public revenue”.
Prior to Christmas, Redknapp’s lawyers issued a statement at the time insisting that he had done nothing wrong.
Harry Redknapp is extremely surprised and disappointed to have been informed that HMRC intend to institute proceedings against him in the week commencing January 11, 2010,” the statement read.
“We believe that the decision to commence proceedings will, in due course, be shown to have been totally misconceived.”
