Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic is set for a 10-day spell on the sidelines after tweaking a nerve in his leg.Cesc Fabregas will miss Saturday’s clash against Everton at the Emirates Stadium but Arsenal have been boosted by Tomas Rosicky’s return. Fabregas aggravated his hamstring injury during a cameo against Aston Villa 11 days ago. Alex Song and Emmanuel Eboue are at the African Cup of Nations but Wenger’s options have at least been bolstered by Rosicky’s return from a groin. Denilson and Andrei Arshavin were scheduled to return for the midweek clash at home to Bolton that was eventually postponed due to snow. It means Nicklas Bendtner (groin), Theo Walcott (side strain), Gael Clichy (back), Kieran Gibbs (foot), Robin van Persie (ankle) and Johan Djourou (knee) remain out. The extent of Bendtner’s groin problem will be discovered later this week when he undergoes tests.
Everton’s new loan signing Landon Donovan could be given a debut at the Emirates stadium. The United States forward, who has joined for a 10-week period, only began training with the club at the start of this week. Although manager David Moyes is reluctant to pitch him in to a tough test at the Emirates Stadium, the options he has open to him may mean the Los Angeles Galaxy star gets a place on the bench. Striker Louis Saha has not played since Boxing Day because of a hamstring problem and is not expected to feature.
Wigan Athletic v Aston Villa (15:00)
Midfielder Mohamed Diame is Wigan’s only absentee for the visit of Aston Villa. The Frenchman is still a week or two away from regaining full fitness from a knee injury sustained last month. A number of the players who impressed manager Roberto Martinez in last week’s FA Cup victory over Hull could come into consideration. Serbia goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic, on loan from Sporting Lisbon, may be included in the squad after receiving his work permit.
Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill has been boosted for the trip to the DW Stadium by the return of James Milner. The England midfielder missed the FA Cup win over Blackburn last weekend with a foot injury. Full-back Luke Young should also shrug off an ankle knock in time to be available. Midfielder Moustapha Salifou is away with Togo at the Afrcian Cup of Nations, while long-term absentee Curtis Davies remains out with a shoulder injury.
Birmingham City v Manchester United (17:30)
Birmingham defender Stephen Carr will return after suspension for the home clash with Manchester United. Carr missed the goalless away draw with Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup while serving a one-game ban for incurring five bookings. Boss Alex McLeish will have to reorganise his bench as fringe players Lee Carsley, Stuart Parnaby and Gregory Vignal are all ruled out through injury. But number two goalkeeper Maik Taylor has recovered from a back problem after having an injection as City look to extend their unbeaten league run to 12 games.
Jonny Evans will partner Wes Brown in central defence as Manchester United look to get their season back on track at St Andrew’s. With Nemanja Vidic (leg) joining Rio Ferdinand (back) on the sidelines, Sir Alex Ferguson will turn to the duo even though they were at the heart of a defence breached by Leeds last Sunday. Paul Scholes (hip) is fit while new arrival Mame Biram Diouf has gained clearance to play and, having been allocated Carlos Tevez’s old shirt number (32), could be involved.
