Zenden completes Sunderland move

Sunderland sign midfielder Boudewijn Zenden until the end of the season, and have an option to keep the Dutch international for a further year.The 33-year-old former Barcelona, Liverpool and Chelsea star had been training with the Black Cats after his contract with Marseille expired. As a free agent, he was able to join a club outside of the transfer window. Zenden is now waiting for international clearance and could face his old club Liverpool on Saturday. He will provide cover in midfield for Sunderland, who are short of numbers in the middle of the park after Dean Whitehead, Grant Leadbitter and Carlos Edwards were sold in the summer while Teemu Tainio was allowed to join Birmingham on loan. Zenden, who spent two years playing in the north east with Middlesbrough from 2003 to 2005, joined Marseille in 2007 and spent two seasons at the Stade Velodrome before opting to leave at the end of last season.
